BREAD SOCIETY

History for Orientation

In early 1998, a group of students, together with some professionals and doctors of education, envisioned that scholastic learning should coincide with the study of Christian moral values, regardless of their religious affiliations.

Interestingly, this vision was also cited in the present Constitution of the Philippines, specifically in Article XIV, Section 3(2) “all educational institutions shall… inculcate patriotism and nationalism, foster love of humanity, respect for human rights ... teach the rights and duties of citizenship, STRENGTHEN ETHICAL AND SPIRITUAL VALUES, DEVELOP MORAL CHARACTER AND PERSONAL DISCIPLINE . . .” Other laws of the land like Presidential Decree No. 62 (PD.62) and Executive Order NO. 319 also stress the need for moral renewal in order to eradicate the social ills that continue to plague our country. For the past several decades, graft and corruption, patronage, politics, apathy, passivity, mendicancy, factionalism, and lack of patriotism among our youth have been the constant, never ending problem of our nation.  Unfortunately, the primary victims of these cancers in society are no less than the youth of today, the youth which Dr. Jose Rizal referred to as the “hope of our nation”.

Yes, there are many governmental and non-governmental organizations currently existing in this archipelago but reality bites, their efforts are not that effective. Fortunately, Mr. Anthony Rivera, Prof. Jonathan Redonga and Dr. Manuel Pangilinan, together with some groups of students from universities and colleges read Rev. 1:3 of St. John. They came to realize that this is the most effective antidote society has endlessly hoped for. In view of these constitutional provisions, the group believed that the constant reading of the Bible and practicing of Christian values written therein offers the best if not the only antidote, to eradicate these social ills. Thus, the Bible Readers Society of the Philippines came into being.

Very soon, their visions spread to various colleges and Universities in the Philippines. They were known to their school in different names like Truth Seekers Club of the City College of Manila, Truth Seekers Society of Polytechnic University of the Philippines, and the Technological University of the Philippines using the name Bible Readers Society of the Philippines.  It was on February 25, 1999 that the name Bible Readers Society of the Philippines (BRead Society) became the official name of the organization.

But just like the Christians depicted in the Bible, the road that BRead Society traversed was not a golden trail. The group went into several hardships, trials and sacrifices like discrimination, delay and worst of all, denial of the Society’s recognition in some educational institutions. But due to an unquestionable legal basis and uncontestable biblical foundation, the Society earned this recognition.

In just a short span of time, a variety of students embraced the principles of the Organization. Students from universities and colleges in Metro Manila like Adamson University, Central Colleges of the Philippines, Centro Escolar University, City College of Manila, City College of Pasig, Don Filemon Aguilar Memorial College, Eulogio “Amang” Rodriguez Institute of Science and Technology, Far Eastern University, Lyceum of the Philippines Manila, Mapúa Institute of Technology, National College for Business Administration, Our Lady Of Fatima University Valenzuela, Our Lady of Lourdes College, PATTS College of Aeronautics, Philippine Christian University, Philippine Maritime Institute, Philippines Merchant Marine Services, Philippine Normal University, Philippines School of Business Administration, Polytechnic University of the Philippines,  Rizal Technological University (RTU) Manila, RTU Taguig,  Systems Technology Institute of Las Pinas, Technological Institute of the Philippines (TIP) Manila, TIP Quezon City, Technological University of the Philippines, University of the East Caloocan, University of Santo Tomas, University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman and UP Manila joined the organization.

Bread Programs

The organization took certain programs, plans and activities as a means of reaching their goals. Their projects includes bible giving, both compact disk and the traditional book format, exhibits and symposia for moral, mental and spiritual growth. It also sponsors recreational activities which boosts physical fitness and health.

It also conducts projects that will benefit the urban poor communities such as medical, dental and legal missions. It also conducts seminars, which will build and enhance its members’ talents and abilities such as leadership training programs.

Bread Society also participates and tie up with government agencies to further extend help to the community. Together with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources and other environment-oriented organization, the society supports and promotes programs that will help conserve our physical environment.

The organization also conducts livelihood programs. It helps the jobless youth look for a decent means of living.

“As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.” Gal 6:10

The purpose of all the programs, projects and activities of the Bible Readers Society of the Philippines sums up to this thing: To teach the youth to READ the Bible, to LISTEN to the words of wisdom and ACT upon them. It aims to impart the knowledge of what a true CHRISTIAN is all about.

Bread Aims

BRead Society aims to promote a more critical study of Biblical principles, practice Christian values written therein, and develop an organization that caters to the pursuit and defense of Biblical truths. As the society gets bigger, so does the burden it carries. But, together with the Executive Committee, the chapters of the Bible Readers Society of the Philippines joined forces in achieving the organization’s goals.

As an organization inside educational institutions, the organization also promotes excellence in the academe. It conducts free tutorial programs to its members and give them emotional support. It encourages its members to do their best for them to achieve their goals in life.

The BRead News Team trains interested students in the mass media with a hope that they could be a conveyor of the Good News in the Bible. The official publication of Bread Society, the BRead Link, also has the same intent, the propagation of the Good News. It also contains features of science and technology development, heath tips and information and the current situation of the chapters and their academe. These two information dissemination program of the Bible Readers Society aims to further strengthen the credibility and authenticity of the Bible as the major source of reliable information in the world.
